Six years ago, right this very moment, I was in a hospital room. My mom, dad, sister, ex-brother-in-law, and husband were all there with me. I labored for over 20 hours, so at this time, I was probably about 15 hours in. Labor is like no other experience you’ve gone through previously and cannot be duplicated until (or if) you have another child. Even then, each birth is unique… as is each child.
Each year, I share a post about my children on their birthdays. Each year, I try to share something unique and special about who they are. What makes Lydia special? She’s the girl who loves endlessly. She loves her family endlessly. She loves her favorite TV shows endlessly. She loves every baby she sees endlessly. She has all the love to give.
My parents came over tonight, and after a bit of a family debate, my mom said I was naive about love. Whether or not I agree is somewhat irrelevant. That simple, naive, sweet, innocent love that some people are able to maintain throughout their lives is nothing short of absolute beauty. When I see Lydia interacting with others, when I see how sensitive she is, when I see how much she loves… it’s the sweetest display of love I’ve ever seen. And when she frustrates me and gets super-emotional or super-sensitive or just plain whiny and seems so difficult in that exact moment… I try to remain calm (as best as possible) and remember just how much she loves me. All of us.
Lydia reminds everyone around her every day of how much she loves them. It’s through her gentle touches, encouraging words, sweet hugs and kisses, and passion for all that she cares for that I’m reminded what true, innocent love looks like. I hope this spirit she has, this love in her heart, is never crushed.
So to my sweet, forever-loving girl, Lydia – the girl who loves endlessly – Happy 6th Birthday!
