Greek Fries with Tzatziki

Are you ready for the *perfect* game day recipe?? Here it is! But first… a story. I currently live in the same general area where I was raised. I left at 17 years old to go away to college for 5 years in Gainesville, lived in the Orlando area for 2 years after that, and then moved back home to be closer to my family. Returning home, I had to rediscover my old neighborhood as an adult: find new hang-outs, new restaurants, and new day trips nearby. One of the new restaurants we found was a family-owned Greek place. I ordered the Greek fries with my meal, and they were incredibly delicious! Using my culinary knowledge, I’ve been able to reproduce both the topping and the tzatziki, which is a yogurt-cucumber dip. Unfortunately, that restaurant went out of business a year or two ago, but this tasty recipe will be mine forever… oh, and all of yours, now that I’m sharing it!

crinkle friesIngredients

Toppings for Fries:

  • 1 bag of Alexia fries (Sweet Potato Fries or Smart Classic Crinkle Cut fries)
  • 4 ounces crumbled feta cheese
  • 2 T finely chopped Italian parsley
  • 1 clove of garlic, crushed
  • zest of half a lemon

Tzatziki:

  • 1 small container of plain Greek yogurt
  • 1/3 cup chopped seedless cucumber
  • juice of half a lemon
  • 2 T finely chopped Italian parsley
  • 1 clove of garlic, crushed
  • salt & pepper to taste

Directions

Begin by gathering the ingredients for the fries and topping. I chose Italian flat leaf parsley, but you can try different herbs, like fresh basil or oregano. The feta gives a nice saltiness, lemon a touch of acid, garlic and parsley for freshness. This recipe is great with Alexia Sweet Potato Fries or Smart Classic Crinkle Cut fries.

Fry IngredientsFollowing the directions on the bag of Alexia fries, preheat your oven and bake the set number of minutes (each variety varies). Here’s a tip to create crispy fries: Place a cooling rack inside your baking sheet and lay the fries on top while baking. This allows the fries to be heated from all directions.

baking friesWhile the fries are baking, you can mix together the tzatziki dip. This is a healthy dip that can also be served with other dishes, like chicken pita wraps, Greek salads, and lamb burgers. Gather the ingredients. Place the yogurt inside a small mesh strainer over a bowl and allow some of the liquid to drip into the bowl. The yogurt will then be even creamier! Make sure the cucumber is finely chopped (but with chunks large enough to give a nice texture to your tzatziki).

tzatziki ingredients

To prepare your Greek topping, combine the ingredients in a bowl. Be sure to crumble your feta to the desired texture.

Fries with topping and dipJust before serving, sprinkle the topping over your fries and serve with a side of tzatziki. Here’s a close-up, just in case you need to pretend you’re actually able to take a bite through the screen. Don’t they look delicious??

sweet potato close-upBryce enjoyed these Greek fries and tzatziki as a snack! They are an amazing food to eat while watching the big game. Try serving with some other Mediterranean favorites, like grilled chicken skewers, marinated tomatoes, and flavorful meatballs.
