“Food is Totally the New Punk Rock”

Posts

Remember back in high school and college when the second you mentioned a band you like, you’d probably get one of the following responses from someone who was “cooler”:

1. I only liked their underground stuff. Once they became mainstream, their music suffered.

2. Wow, what a poseur!

3. If you like (popular band), you’d probably really like (underground band).

4. Have you heard (lead singer’s) side project with (some other random musicians you probably haven’t heard of)? It’s much better than his regular stuff.

5. You buy CDs? I buy vinyl…from a catalog…only printed in the UK.

Well, in a conversation with my best friend since childhood Alicia recently about food, she said “Food is totally the new punk rock” and it couldn’t be more true. Have you seen the tattoos on chefs recently? They’ve become the new rock stars!

So here’s how the new conversation looks:

1. You eat eggs? Make sure they’re pastured. Have you seen what happens to chickens laying standard store-bought and cage-free eggs?

2. You get your beef from (grocery store)? I only buy beef that I know is grass-fed, raised by local farmers.

3. You drink what kind of milk? Wait…it’s pasteurized? You know raw dairy is best, right? Have you read about the health benefits?

4. Do you prefer kefir or kombucha? What else do you ferment?

5. Soak your grains…and beans…

In the same way that the most unknown, hidden musical talent was always the best — the most hidden, unknown food sources are the best. Whether you’re shopping from an Amish farm order or foraging for geoduck, ramps, and fiddleheads…shopping for food at Walmart is like listening to Lady Gaga and thinking that she’s the best musician alive. There are other, better, more innovative options.

I thought I’d share some photos of real food you can’t find in the average grocery stores. It’s kinda like when you had bootleg tapes or CDs from bands with individually Xeroxed inserts. They just made you feel better, right? Well, so does this food!

This is my cap from the Raw Organic Concord Grape Juice we love…the one that says it can be harmful and cause serious illness. Why does juice have to be pasteurized? It’s just squeezed grapes. Remember when some kids got killed moshing back in the mid-90s? Same thing.

Mmmm….Bacon! Real bacon!

Children should know real food sources. Lydia loved picking out this red cabbage from a farm in Miami.

We used it to make kimchee.

You don’t see these in stores…

large strawberry
Fresh raw cheese with cracked pepper and pink Himalayan salt.

Real Grade B maple syrup.

Real honey from a strawberry patch with bees that are pollinating strawberry plants.

Sausage “not for sale”

Chickens shouldn’t be vegetarians. They need to eat worms, bugs, etc. not just grain.

pastured eggs
And eggs aren’t always white.

colorful eggs
Double-yolk pastured eggs. Can’t find those in stores.

And one more. Nice orange pastured eggs yolks.

And remember…

no farmers no food
