My sister is a registered nurse, and we often speak about healthy lifestyle choices. I used to think that eating a clean diet was enough to stay healthy and maintain an ideal weight, while my sister focused more on fitness, specifically running. What we have both learned over the last few years is that it takes the combination of clean eating and physical fitness to really change your body, improve your energy, and hopefully increase health and longevity. If you want a hand with achieving your ideal weight check these products.
Let’s start with clean eating. A lot of people ask me “How do I eat like you?” and it’s pretty simple actually: shop the perimeter of the grocery store to avoid processed foods. The perimeter generally contains the best ingredients: proteins, fruits, vegetables, and dairy. From the interior of the store, purchase a few pantry ingredients like nuts, maple syrup, honey, healthy condiments, and beans. Make all of your snack foods and meals from-scratch. Keep it simple! Here’s a chart that outlines some of the basics of clean eating.
As for physical activity, I would recommend two things. Each day, try to incorporate some type of physical activity into your daily routine: a walk around your block, chasing your kids at the park, even sweeping and mopping your floor. Then, try to schedule an hour of structured exercise, try with Core Exercises for Lower Back Pain with a combination of cardio and weigh-lifting, into your schedule two to three times a week. What I’ve found that is really important is to have a partner to support you in your fitness journey. My husband and sister-in-law have both been awesome partners in getting healthier and feeling better. I’m so grateful to have them both!
When you combine physical fitness and clean eating, not only will you reach a more ideal weight, you will feel stronger and more energetic. Below is a recipe I created for a great post-workout drink. I have outlined the nutritional benefits of each ingredient.
Post-Workout Protein Drink
- 1 cup Silk Almond Coconut blend (for calcium, Vitamin E, and Vitamin B12)
- 2 T cashew butter (for heart-healthy fat and copper)
- 1 T nonGMO protein powder (for protein to build muscle)
- 1 t raw cacao (for antioxidants)
- 1/2 banana (for potassium)
- 1 scoop ice
Combine ingredients in a blender until you reach a smooth consistency and drink immediately. It’s a delicious, refreshing drink with multiple health benefits to recover after a great workout! Silk Almond Coconut Blend is a new, nonGMO verified, non-dairy milk. It is soy-free and gluten-free, so it’s great for individuals with allergies and dietary restrictions. Silk Almond Coconut Blend offers an original and unsweetened variety. I used the unsweetened variety in my drink, and since the coconut had a good natural sweetness, I didn’t miss the addition of sugar. Honey can be added to the drink if you would like it to be sweeter.
