Every child has a favorite Disney princess or favorite Disney hero… but do you have a favorite Disney villain? Disney movies are excellent at portraying the quintessential princess who goes on incredible missions to save her kingdom and the hero who battles evil forces to save the day. But what about the villains? Disney movies have truly created some of the most nefarious villains, those characters you just love to hate! Well, now, the children of some of our favorite villains – Maleficent, Jafar, Cruella De Vil, and The Evil Queen from Snow White – have been brought together in a live-action Disney Channel original movie, Descendants. To celebrate the debut of this movie on July 31st, I have created a sinful snack: Chocolate + Salted Caramel Apples.
Ingredients:
- 4 red apples
- 2/3 cup sugar
- 1 t vanilla extract
- 1/3 cup heavy cream
- 1 T butter
- 1/2 t salt
- 3 ounces bittersweet chocolate
Directions:
Begin by making this decadent salted caramel sauce. Pour the sugar and vanilla extract in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir continuously as the sugar begins to melt. You must keep the sugar moving and watch very closely. As the sugar melts, turn the stove down to low. The moment all the sugar is dissolved and the color becomes a warmer amber, quickly add the heavy cream and whisk until combined. Then turn the heat off, whisk in the butter, followed by the sugar. Pour it into a small jar to cool until almost room temperature. Remember: it will be very hot.
I selected the reddest apples I could possibly find to represent that moment in Snow White when the Evil Queen tempts the beautiful Snow White with the poisoned apple. They look innocent for now… but not for long!
Drizzle the caramel sauce over the apples and allow the caramel to set on your kitchen countertop. These look quite decadent (and somewhat evil) already… but we’ve only just begun!
Next, melt three ounces of bittersweet chocolate in a small pan on your stove top or in the microwave. Drizzle the melted chocolate over the caramel. I like how by drizzling the caramel and chocolate, you get this dripping affect rather than just dunking the apples in each one. Adds an extra bit of…sinfulness.
For the last step, insert twigs in the tops of each apple. You can purchase these in bundles at your local craft store. Remember, Snow White lived in a small cottage in the woods with the Seven Dwarfs, so the twigs give these apples that feeling of being deep in the forest.
You can eat these apples as is, with gooey caramel and melted chocolate (they almost taste like a dessert fondue), or you can let them set up in the refrigerator to cool completely and slice. Watch them with your favorite Disney movie, like 101 Dalmatians, Aladdin, Snow White, or Sleeping Beauty in anticipation of the release of Descendants on July 31st.
Looking to make this villainous treat? Head to Walmart to purchase all of the ingredients, including the apples and chocolate below. And don’t forget to tune into Descendants on the Disney Channel on July 31st. If you don’t have the Disney Channel, you can pick up a copy of the movie on DVD at Walmart. While you’re there, grab the soundtrack CD, too!
