This sourdough bread recipe is simple to make and has a crunchy crust with a soft inside.
When I began blogging, I was known as Huppie Mama – crunchy, green mama extraordinaire. I baked everything from scratch, shared my favorite ‘granola’ tips with my readers, talked about breastfeeding and cloth diapers and babywearing. Now that my kids are 7 and 9, my blog has evolved from a baby/toddler hippie mom blog to a family-focused food blog. I love sharing our favorite quick & easy recipes, along with our family adventures. I’ve been working on reworking some of my favorite posts from days past, and I remembered this recipe that was part of a post on foods for immune support. I pulled the recipe and re-edited the images, so that I could share with you this delicious Sourdough Bread Recipe. I was gifted sourdough starter almost 6 years ago, and to this day, it’s still {somewhat} alive in two jars in my refrigerator. For this recipe, make sure your starter is very active so the bread rises properly and has the delicious texture you expect from a sourdough bread.
Sourdough Bread Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup active sourdough starter
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1 t salt
Sourdough Bread Directions:
Gather the four ingredients for this recipe. Sourdough starter becomes active when it sits in a warm area for about 12 hours. I generally place a jar of starter in my oven with the light on overnight, lightly covered with a paper towel. It will grow and bubble as it becomes active. For the water in this recipe, make sure it is warm to the touch, about 105 to 110 degrees.
In a stand mixer, combine all four ingredients and knead with a bread hook for about 5 minutes. If you find that the mixture is too tacky, add a little more flour. If it is too dry, add a few drops of water. When the dough ingredients are thoroughly combined and kneaded, cover the bowl with a warm, moist towel and place in a warm area until it doubles in size, about 6 to 12 hours. The longer it rises, the stronger the sourdough flavor.
When the dough has doubled in size, place on a lightly-floured pan and form into your preferred shape (circle or oval). If it deflates significantly, allow it to rise again for about an hour. When it is ready for the oven, preheat to 400 degrees and bake about 30 – 35 minutes. The top of the bread should have a slightly browned, crunchy appearance.
I like to serve my sourdough bread with softened butter, but it would also be great with peanut butter, jelly, or your favorite cheese. If you’re looking for another delicious sourdough recipe, try these Sourdough Cinnamon Rolls, the perfect mix of sweet and tart!
