Have fun with your kids, playing these 5 retro outdoor summer games!
Did you have that childhood summer that was just amazing? For me, that was summer 1990, between 5th and 6th grade. My best friend and I used to call it *the good summer* because we would put on our bathing suits and enjoy outdoor summer games until the sun set. Picture fun in the swimming pool, New Kids on the Block playing in the background, spiral perms with teased-up bangs, oversized T-shirts tied to one side, fanny pouches, neon colors…it was such an awesome time to be a kid! While I cannot create that degree of awesomeness today, I sure can hide our electronic devices and force the kids outside for some good old-fashioned outdoor fun with a delicious frozen treat, right?
Check out these five retro outdoor summer games with your kids!
Outdoor Summer Games: Sprinkler Twister
Turn on your sprinkler and get out your old Twister board game – it’s time for a new “twist” on this classic game! Just like the traditional method of play, someone will spin the wheel to determine where everyone’s hands and feet will go, but this time, there will be a new challenge because the play mat will be slippery from the sprinklers! Be sure to wear bathing suits and keep towels nearby when playing these outdoor summer games.
Outdoor Summer Games: Sidewalk Chalk Car Race
My kids have so many toy cars that they play with indoors, but why not take them for a fun race outdoors? Using sidewalk chalk, they drew race tracks on the driveway in different colors. They grabbed a big basket filled with all different kinds of toy cars from Bryce’s bedroom and brought them outside. They lined the cars up at the starting line, “On your mark, get set, GO!” and the race began down the driveway!
Outdoor Summer Games: Water Hop
Jumping rope is fun and all, but what about jumping water? With this fun water hop game, one person grabs a hose and rotates it in a manner similar to a jump rope {this is a great job for moms and dads}. The kids line up side-by-side and jump over the line of water, like they would a jump rope. You can even play classic jump rope games like “Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear” or “Cinderella Dressed in Yellow”. Skip, jump with feet together, turn-around, or stand backwards – So many fun ways to play Water Hop!
Outdoor Summer Games: Hula Jump
Another fun twist on jumping rope? Use a hula hoop! There are so many fun ways to hula hoop! Try using multiple hula hoops, hula hoop with your foot {remember that Skip-It toy from when we were kids?}, try moving to a particular beat, etc. but you can also get a really big hula hoop for your kids, and they can use it like a jump rope! Add some music and pause it at random to make a freeze jump game!
Outdoor Summer Games: Ball Toss
For my final game idea: Ball Toss. It’s simple enough. Just round up a bunch of balls from around your house and in your backyard. Remember that hula hoop from the last game? Hold it up, and toss the balls through. You can make it fun by trying all different types of balls, holding the hula hoop at all different heights, seeing who can get the most balls in, or even using water balloons instead of balls.
And the most important part after a day of outdoor summer games? A refreshing treat, of course! Sonic has partnered with Budget Saver to create a new frozen treat just in time for summer. These Sonic Slush Pops, available in Ocean Water, Cherry Limeade, and Strawberry Lemonade, are definitely the perfect summer treat!
Free of high fructose corn syrup {a definite win for moms and kids} these are super tasty, with a coconut lemon-lime flavor. So refreshing after a fun day of outdoor play! Hide your electronic devices, gather your kids’ bikes, ball, jump ropes, hula hoops, and turn on the sprinklers for a summer day of good ol’ fashioned fun like we had as children!
Head to Walmart where you can find Sonic Slush Pops in the freezer section.
