This homemade corn tortillas recipe is so simple to prepare, you’ll want homemade tortillas every time!
When grabbing our ingredients at the grocery store for taco Tuesday, it’s easy to just get that box with the tortillas, taco seasoning, and taco sauce, but let me tell you: it adds just a few minutes to your cook time but a lot of authenticity when you make homemade corn tortillas from scratch. This homemade corn tortillas recipe requires just three ingredients, two of which I can guarantee you already have in your home {oil and water}. The main ingredient is masa harina. This is finely grown cornmeal that has a touch of lime in it. It can be purchased either in the ethnic food section or baking section of your grocery store. Within minutes, you can add the authentic toasted corn flavor to your tacos, tostadas, and chalupas. This recipe makes 10 tortillas.
Homemade Corn Tortillas Ingredients:
- 1 cup masa harina
- 3/4 cup + 1 T water
- oil
Homemade Corn Tortillas Directions:
Begin by forming the dough. In a large bowl, combine the 1 cup of masa harina and 3/4 cup + 1 tablespoon of water. Use your hands to bring the dough together. It should go from being a crumbly texture to being a moist dough, similar to a sugar cookie dough.
Since this makes ten corn tortillas, divide the dough into ten small balls, each about 1.5″ in diameter. Line a tortilla press with clear plastic wrap, and place the ball of dough in the center. Fold the plastic wrap over the top, and squeeze the tortilla press. Both Lydia and Bryce had fun helping me with this part – it’s a great way to get your kids in the kitchen. Remove each flattened tortilla and set aside.
The last step is simple. Brush a light coating of oil at the bottom of a pan or griddle. Place each tortilla on the pan. When the edges of the tortilla turn a slight golden, flip it over, and cook that side until it is also a light golden. Your corn tortillas are now ready to serve!
These homemade corn tortillas are not just perfect for your everyday chicken or beef tacos, but they are also great in delicious dishes like chalupas. To make a chalupa, you will have to fry the tortilla in oil a second time until it is crisp. I will be sharing this recipe on the blog in a few weeks, in an authentic Cinco de Mayo Celebration post. You can also try these tortillas with some of my other favorite recipes, like Chipotle Chicken Tostadas and this Instant Pot Shredded Beef.
