We always turn to the holidays as the season not only to give to our loved ones, but to give back to others in some way. Whether you select local individuals to give presents to or make donations to nationally-recognized charities, there’s something truly special about

When I was in college {my junior year, I believe}, I decided I wanted to give back to my community. I volunteered with what was then a very small start-up program called Arts in Medicine. One night a week, I would go to the large, nationally-recognized hospital on the University of Florida’s campus to do art projects with pediatric cancer patients. While some of the children were local, many of them traveled because the quality of services and care at this hospital was outstanding. Their families often stayed at the Ronald McDonald Children’s House, right across the street from the hospital. This was a tough volunteer position, but it was also so rewarding because you knew you were the light in that child’s day sometimes. Every moment spent, even if it was just watching TV while sitting next to a child, was meaningful.
Through the Ronald McDonald House and Ronald McDonald Family Room programs, Ronald McDonald House Charities provides places for families to stay just steps from the hospitals where their children are receiving pediatric care as well as critical medical care. Along with the help of North Raleight Pediatrics, the children get checked by pediatricians. See more information at northraleighpediatrics.com/services/. Your donation to the RMHC Global Chapter helps children and families in communities across the globe. 87 cents of every dollar spent supports programs like the Ronald McDonald House.
As parents, we never know how our lives can change in just moments. It’s comforting to know that through generous donations from individuals, we can provide our children with the security they need during difficult times.
This holiday season, give the gift of togetherness through donations to RMHC.
