Check out these five tips to straighten long wavy hair.
As a redhead with naturally coarse, curly, frizzy hair, I spent a good majority of my life with ponytails and sloppy buns, hoping nobody would notice my untamed mane. It took most of my life to learn how to properly style, care for, and love my hair. I decided last fall I was really going to be better about coloring my hair regularly to give it a bold, vibrant hue, using quality products to wash my and style my hair, straightening my hair each time I washed it, and wearing it down more often. Learn about the steps I take to straighten long wavy hair below!
Straighten Long Wavy Hair: Tip One
I always washed my hair every two to three days because that seemed to be the norm. What I’ve learned recently is that because my hair is dry, course, color-treated, and heat-styled, my hair looks significantly better when I wash it every five days. It gives it a healthier, sleeker appearance. I recommend SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Restore Oil Shampoo and SheaMoisture Strengthen & Restore Rinse-Out Conditioner. SheaMoisture products are free of sulfates, parabens, paraffin, gluten, propylene glycol, mineral oil, synthetic color, DEA, petroleum, and formaldehyde – and they are never tested on animals. The Jamaican Black Castor Oil products are made with natural ingredients like Organic Shea Butter {deeply moisturizes while conditioning hair and scalp, Jamaican Black Castor Oil {loaded with reparative omegas that reduce breakage and promote healthy hair}, and Peppermint Oil {invigorates the scalp for a stimulating experience}. It also has a great herbaceous fragrance that leaves behind a nice aroma when your hair is dry.

Straighten Long Wavy Hair: Tip Two
In addition to shampooing and conditioning my hair, I need a product I can apply to my hair that gives it the moisture it needs to not look dry and brittle, locking in that straight, silky feel. The SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Restore Leave In Conditioner does just that. I quickly towel dry my hair and apply about a tablespoon from root-to-tip. It strengthens damaged, brittle hair, while helping to reduce breakage and shedding. When you color your hair and style with heat, you are prone to get split, dry ends. When applied to damp hair, it gives your hair a much healthier appearance when dry.
Straighten Long Wavy Hair: Tip Three
Rather than relying on a blow dryer to thoroughly dry my hair, I do a quick blow dry just to remove the dampness. I don’t worry about if it looks straight or wavy, frizzy or not. The trick is just to remove a majority of the moisture to prepare my hair for the next step.
Straighten Long Wavy Hair: Tip Four
Once my hair is mostly dry, that’s when I hit it with the flat iron. I set it to the highest temperature, use a comb to separate small sections of hair, and run the flat iron from root-to-tip. I go all around my head until my hair looks straight. I find the most difficult portion of my head is right at the crown because the waves are tightest there.
Straighten Long Wavy Hair: Tip Five
I’ve learned that the best way to really preserve my straight hair is to put my hair in a bun to sleep. When I wake up and take the bun out, my hair looks soft, sleek, and straight. Most importantly – no frizz or other signs of damage! I sleep this way each evening between washings, and it really helps me maximize the time I’ve invested in styling my hair.
With just the right products, it’s fairly simple to fall into a great hair care routine. I wash my hair as-needed based on when it looks and feels ready to be re-styled, use the right products by SheaMoisture, and apply heat to get a straight look. Having styled hair is just one of the gifts I can give myself as a woman who likes to confidently face the world, looking and feeling great!
While my hair is quite thick and very long, washing it with SheaMoisture products made with natural ingredients every five days makes the task of straightening my hair take no more than an hour. And my hair is left soft, silky, and manageable. Head to Walmart where you can find the full collections of SheaMoisture products, with something perfect for every hair type.
