Sourdough Bread and Butter

This sourdough bread recipe is simple to make and has a crunchy crust with a soft inside.




  1. Gather the four ingredients for this recipe. Sourdough starter becomes active when it sits in a warm area for about 12 hours. I generally place a jar of starter in my oven with the light on overnight, lightly covered with a paper towel. It will grow and bubble as it becomes active. For the water in this recipe, make sure it is warm to the touch, about 105 to 110 degrees.
  2. In a stand mixer, combine all four ingredients and knead with a bread hook for about 5 minutes. If you find that the mixture is too tacky, add a little more flour. If it is too dry, add a few drops of water. When the dough ingredients are thoroughly combined and kneaded, cover the bowl with a warm, moist towel and place in a warm area until it doubles in size, about 6 to 12 hours. The longer it rises, the stronger the sourdough flavor.
  3. When the dough has doubled in size, place on a lightly-floured pan and form into your preferred shape (circle or oval). If it deflates significantly, allow it to rise again for about an hour. When it is ready for the oven, preheat to 400 degrees and bake about 30 – 35 minutes. The top of the bread should have a slightly browned, crunchy appearance.
