With kids returning to school, get ideas for creating an Elementary School Homework Area.
The school year has already begun, which means I have a 1st grader and a 3rd grader. This is the first year I’ve had two students with real homework assignments. Spelling tests to study for, math worksheets, 30 minutes of reading aloud per night – there’s a lot for us to do! That means we need a dedicated homework space. We completed the addition on our home, this sunroom, during the last school year, and this area is specifically for the children. Whether your kids go to an Online Elementary School or a traditional one, it’s recommended to give them a space dedicated for homework. Here’s how we turned our space into an elementary school homework area.
Elementary School Homework Area Materials
To create a homework space for my children, we decided to keep things fairly simple. This way, it was easy to organize and clean up after they complete their homework, work on an art project, use their technology, etc. Here are my ideas for furniture and supplies for this space:
- check this list to see wooden tables with colorful chairs
- cubbies with colorful canvas bins
- plastic drawers with supplies
- a caddy with pencils, erasers, scissors, markers, etc.
- additional school supplies in hanging cups
- a globe and/or map
- portable light for detailed work at the table
- chargers for electronic devices

Creating an Inviting Elementary School Homework Area
After a long day of school, it can be a serious challenge to motivate children to sit down to do their homework. This is especially true of my son Bryce who would much rather zone out on the couch with my phone or watch his favorite cartoon on TV. To create an inviting space for kids requires lots of color! We hired painters dublin to repaint the walls a pale, buttery yellow, a nice calming color, our storage is bold and multi-colored. Our chairs are different colors, too. The storage bins are filled with so many of their favorite craft materials, building materials, and learning materials. We bought a new paper display stand to keep their books and papers organized. We added the map of the United States last spring, and the globe is a new addition to help the kids learn about places around the world. I have also included Jasco Cordinate Décor Extension Cords so the kids can use their technology while sitting together at this table.
Jasco Cordinate Décor Extension Cords are extra-long 10-foot cords available in three stylish colors: brown, gray, mint {new colors coming soon: pink, black, white, and navy}. The braided woven fabric increases durability and prevents tangles, while the flat plug saves space behind furniture and other tight spaces. Cordinate Extension Cords are available in multiple configurations:
- Three 2-prong outlets
- Three 3-prong outlets
- One 3-prong outlet + two USB charging ports
- Three USB charging ports
What I really like about these Jasco Cordinate Décor Extension Cords is that they are more than just functional extension cords – the fun colors complement our colorful decor!
If the kids continue to work on homework or leisure activities later in the evening, the Jasco Cordinate Décor Extension Cords tamper resistant outlets are designed for safety. The surge-protection is great for your devices, like computers and tablets.
