Most people visit a local shelter or a pet store to pick out the perfect pet for their family. But sometimes… pets pick us.  I was driving home one evening in early 2007. I saw a small black and white cat dart in front of my car. I stopped the car to see if the cat was okay, and she jumped into my car. Because I already had three other cats at the time (not to mention three dogs), I tried to find her a new home, but then decided that Bella would be a part of my family. Over 8 years later, she’s still a part of our family.

I decided since our human children receive all types of Halloween treats, that perhaps my kitties {Bella and Scooter} should receive special Halloween treats, too, so I made Halloween Catnip Toys for them. These are easy to sew in just a few minutes and lead to hours of play… and perhaps a little drooling.

Halloween Catnip Toys

  • Small pieces of Halloween fabric
  • Thread
  • Dried catnip

Begin by selecting your fabric and cutting into your desired shapes, two pieces per print. I thought it would be fun to make pumpkins out of this orange star fabric and a cat head out of the black cat fabric. These fabric pieces are actually remnants after making Lydia a Halloween dress years ago!

cut fabric

Place patterned sides outward and sew about 3/4″ from the edge of the fabric, living a gap about an inch-and-a-half to fill with catnip.

I found this organic dried catnip at PetSmart while shopping for cat food. Fill each cat toy with catnip until it is nicely stuffed.

Complete these Halloween Catnip Toys by closing the open seam and making snips along the edges to create a fringe. This gives your kitties even more ways to play with their toys!

As my cats are getting older, Bella is about nine and Scooter is about twelve, it’s important that they eat a good diet. I purchased a new cat food at PetSmart this time: Purina Muse® Natural Cat Food. With Muse you don’t have to choose between natural nutrition and food that tastes great. Your cat can have both when you choose Muse.

Muse cat foodMuse Cat Food recipes are made with real fish or poultry and contain no artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives. Muse offers thirty 100% complete and balanced varieties for adult cats, 24 of which are grain-free. Bella liked this new cat food so much, she licked the entire plate clean!
